Directed by the king of the monkeys to search for Vaidehi everywhere, the elephants among monkeys go quickly as they were told. They search lakes, river thickets, the sky, cities, river strongholds and regions on every side. All the monkey troop-leaders, as Sugriva described, search the lands there with their mountains, woods and forests. Having searched all day, intent on finding Sita, the monkeys gather on the ground at nightfall. In those lands, finding trees bearing fruit in every season, the monkeys make their beds for the night every day. Counting that first day, within the month the elephants among monkeys come to Prasravana, meeting the king of the monkeys, hopeless. Having searched the eastern direction as told, with his ministers, very mighty Vinata comes back without seeing Sita. Having searched the whole northern direction, the great monkey Shatabali comes back then with his army, afraid. Sushena, having searched the western quarter with the monkeys, comes together with them when the month is full and approaches Sugriva. Approaching and saluting Sugriva, who is seated on the ridge of Prasravana with Rama, they say: “All the mountains have been searched, and the dense forests, the rivers running to the sea, and all the countries there are. All the caves you named have been searched, and the great thickets spread with creepers. In dense, hard, rough places, huge creatures were searched out and killed; and the dense regions were searched again and again. But Hanuman, of noble spirit and birth, will find Maithili, lord of the monkeys; for Hanuman, son of the wind, has gone the very way that Sita went.”
