Sugriva Kills Kumbha
In the terrible fighting, Angada meets Kampana, who strikes him with a mace; Angada staggers, then fells him with a mountain peak. Shonitaksha charges in his chariot and pierces Angada with every kind of arrow; Angada crushes his bow, chariot and arrows; Shonitaksha leaps up with sword and shield; Angada snatches the sword and cuts him from shoulder to waist like a sacred thread, then rushes at the enemy, sword in hand. Yupaksha and Prajangha attack; Angada stands between Shonitaksha and Prajangha like the full moon between the two Vishakha stars, and his uncles Mainda and Dvivida stand by him. Prajangha cuts the monkeys’ trees with his sword, Yupaksha their missiles with arrows, Shonitaksha their trees with his mace. Prajangha rushes at Angada with a great sword; Angada strikes him with an ashvakarna tree and knocks the sword from his hand; Prajangha punches Angada’s forehead; Angada recovers and strikes Prajangha’s head from his body with his fist. Yupaksha, weeping for his uncle, comes down with a sword; Dvivida seizes him; Shonitaksha strikes Dvivida’s chest; Dvivida takes his mace; Mainda slaps Yupaksha; Dvivida tears Shonitaksha’s face with his nails and grinds him into the ground; Mainda crushes Yupaksha in his arms until he dies.
The broken rakshasa army turns to Kumbha, son of Kumbhakarna, who rallies it and, best of archers, shoots arrows like poisonous snakes; his bow with its arrow shines like a second rainbow. Drawing to his ear, he strikes Dvivida with a golden-feathered arrow; Dvivida falls like a mountain. Mainda hurls a great rock; Kumbha splits it with five arrows and strikes Mainda in the vitals; he falls senseless. Seeing his uncles down, Angada rushes at Kumbha; Kumbha pierces him with many arrows, but Angada does not tremble and rains rocks and trees on his head, which Kumbha cuts down; then Kumbha shoots Angada in both brows, and blood blinds him. Covering his eyes with one hand, Angada grips a sala tree with the other, bends it, tears it up and hurls it; Kumbha cuts it with seven arrows; Angada, in pain, faints. Rama, told that Angada is sinking like a man drowning in the sea, sends Jambavan, Sushena and Vegadarshi; Kumbha holds them off with arrows like a mountain blocking a lake.
Then Sugriva, putting his nephew Angada behind him, rushes at Kumbha like a lion at an elephant, hurls trees that Kumbha cuts until they bristle with arrows like shataghnis, endures his arrows, snatches his bow, bright as Indra’s, and breaks it. Then he says: you have shown marvellous speed with arrows and humility and power, brother of Nikumbha; you alone are born stronger than your father; the gods cannot overcome you, as the passions cannot overcome the self-controlled; in archery you equal Indrajit and in power Ravana; you are the best of the rakshasas in strength. I did not kill you before for fear of reproach, since you were tired from your great deeds; rest, and see my strength. Honoured by this, half in scorn, Kumbha blazes like a fire fed with ghee and seizes Sugriva in his arms; they wrestle like two elephants past rut, breathing smoke and flame, their feet sinking into the earth, the sea churning. Sugriva hurls Kumbha into the salt sea, showing its bottom, and a wave like the Vindhya rises; Kumbha springs up, throws Sugriva down and punches his chest so that his armour bursts and blood flows, sparks flying like lightning from Meru struck by the thunderbolt. Sugriva clenches a fist like a thunderbolt, blazing like the sun with a thousand rays, and brings it down on Kumbha’s chest; Kumbha falls like a fire gone out, like Mars falling from the sky, like the bull of the herd struck by Rudra. The earth and its mountains shake, and fear enters the rakshasas.

glorious lord of the monkeys, of great courage, was not distressed. Being pierced, suddenly bearing those arrows,

he snatched Kumbha’s bow, bright as Indra’s bow, and broke it. Then, leaping down quickly, having done a very difficult deed,
he said in anger to Kumbha, like an elephant with a broken tusk: “Elder brother of Nikumbha, your valour and that speed of arrows are wonderful,

“and your humility and power, or Ravana’s, you who are like Prahlada, Bali, the slayer of Vritra, Kubera and Varuna.

“In archery you are equal to Indrajit, and in power to Ravana; you are today the best in the world of the rakshasas in strength and valour.

“Let beings see today your wondrous great clash with me in battle, like Shakra’s and Shambara’s.

“An unequalled deed has been done, and skill in weapons shown, and these monkey heroes of terrible valour struck down by you.

“And from fear of reproach you were not killed by me, hero, worn out from the deeds done; rest, and see my strength.”
Honoured by those words of Sugriva, mixed with contempt, his splendour grew like that of a fire offered ghee.
Then Kumbha seized Sugriva with both arms; like two elephants past their rut, sighing again and again,
their limbs locked together, rubbing against each other, letting out smoky flames from their mouths from exertion,
by the blows of their feet the earth sank, and Varuna’s abode was churned, its waves whirling.
Then Sugriva, lifting Kumbha, threw him with force into the salt water, showing the bottom of the ocean.
Then, from Kumbha’s fall, a mass of water rose, like the Vindhya and Mandara, and spread on every side.
Then Kumbha, springing up and throwing Sugriva down, angry, struck him on the chest with a fist like the thunderbolt.
His armour burst and blood appeared; that very swift fist struck back against the ring of bones.
From its force there arose a great blazing splendour, like a flame born from the crash of the thunderbolt on Mount Meru.
Struck there by him, Sugriva, bull among monkeys, the mighty one, clenched a fist like a thunderbolt.
With the splendour of the sun’s disk opened with a thousand rays, the valiant one brought down his fist on Kumbha’s chest.
By that blow, Kumbha, reeling, badly hurt, fell then like a fire with its flames gone.
Struck by the fist, the rakshasa fell quickly, like the red-bodied planet with blazing rays falling from the sky by chance.
