“Tomorrow”: The King’s Haste
After further counsel, Dasharatha decides: tomorrow is Pushya; tomorrow Rama will be crowned. He sends Sumantra again for Rama, who arrives uneasy at being summoned twice. His father says: “I am old; I have enjoyed every pleasure, performed a hundred sacrifices, given, studied, had the son I wanted. I owe nothing to gods, sages, ancestors or brahmanas. Nothing is left for me to do but crown you. And I have bad dreams; meteors fall with thunder by day; astrologers say my star is beset by the Sun, Mars and Rahu. Such omens usually mean a king’s death or a terrible calamity. So be crowned before my mind changes, for men’s minds are fickle. Tonight, fast with your wife, sleep on darbha grass, and let your friends guard you, for such undertakings meet many obstacles. And it is the right time, while Bharata is away from the city. Bharata keeps to the conduct of the good, follows his elder brother, is righteous and compassionate; yet the human mind is unsteady.”
Rama goes to his mother’s apartments and finds Kausalya in silk in the shrine, praying silently for his good fortune, with Sumitra, Lakshmana and Sita there already. He tells her: “Father has appointed me to protect the people; tomorrow I will be consecrated. Sita must fast with me tonight; please have the auspicious rites done for us.” With tears of joy, Kausalya blesses him: “Live long, Rama; your enemies are slain. I bore you under a lucky star.” Rama turns to Lakshmana: “Rule this earth with me, Lakshmana, my second self. Enjoy the pleasures and the fruits of the kingdom; I want my life and kingdom for your sake.” He salutes his mothers, takes leave of Sita and goes home.

“Tomorrow will be Pushya; tomorrow my son, lotus-eyed Rama, is to be consecrated as crown prince,” the lord resolved.
Then, entering the inner apartments, King Dasharatha called the charioteer: “Bring Rama here again.”
Accepting his words, the charioteer went quickly back to Rama’s house to bring Rama once more.
The gatekeepers announced his coming again to Rama, and hearing that he had come, Rama grew uneasy.
Having him brought in at once, Rama said: “Tell me fully the reason for your coming again.”
The charioteer said to him: “The king wishes to see you. Having heard, you are the judge of whether you go or not.”
Hearing the charioteer’s words, Rama too set out in haste for the royal palace to see the lord of men again.
Hearing that Rama had come, King Dasharatha had him brought into the house, wishing to tell him the dearest news.
As soon as the glorious Raghava entered his father’s house, he saw his father from afar and bowed with joined palms.
The lord of the earth raised him as he bowed, embraced him, gave him a seat, and said again to Rama:
“Rama, I am old and long-lived; I have enjoyed the pleasures I wished for; I have performed as I liked a hundred sacrifices rich in food and abundant fees.
“The child I longed for was born to me: you, today without equal on earth. I have given, sacrificed and studied, best of men.
“I have experienced the joys I desired, hero. I am free of debt to the gods, sages, ancestors and brahmanas, and to myself.
“Nothing remains for me to do except your consecration. So you should do for me what I tell you.
“Today all the people want you as their lord. So I will consecrate you as crown prince, my son.
“And today, Rama Raghava, I see bad dreams; meteors fall from the sky by day with great roars, with thunder.
“And astrologers tell me, Rama, that my birth-star is beset by the dreadful planets, the Sun, Mars and Rahu.
“Usually, when such omens arise, a king meets death or falls into terrible calamity.
“So, Raghava, before my mind becomes confused, be consecrated; for the minds of living beings are unsteady.
“Today the moon has come to Punarvasu, just before Pushya; tomorrow, the astrologers say, it will certainly be joined with Pushya.
“Be consecrated then, under Pushya; my mind is hurrying me. Tomorrow I will consecrate you as crown prince, scorcher of enemies.
“So from today, with yourself disciplined, you must spend this night fasting with your wife, sleeping on a bed of darbha grass.
“And let your friends guard you vigilantly today on every side; undertakings of this kind meet many obstacles.
“While Bharata is away from the city, just so long is the time ripe for your consecration, in my view.
“Certainly your brother Bharata keeps to the conduct of the good: he follows his elder brother, he is righteous, compassionate and master of his senses.
“Yet the minds of men are not constant, so I think, Raghava, even of the good who are steadfast in dharma, adorned by what they have done.”
So addressed, and given leave, with the consecration set for tomorrow, Rama saluted his father, told “Go,” and went home.
Entering his own house, after the king had ordered the consecration, he came out at that very moment and went to his mother’s inner apartments.
There he saw his mother, wholly absorbed, in linen garments, silent in the shrine, praying for his good fortune.
Sumitra had come there earlier, and Lakshmana, and Sita had been brought, having heard the happy news of Rama’s consecration.
At that time Kausalya stood with her eyes closed, attended by Sumitra, Sita and Lakshmana. Having heard of her son’s consecration as crown prince under Pushya, she was meditating on the Person, Janardana, with breath restrained.
Approaching her, still in her discipline, and saluting her, Rama spoke these excellent words, gladdening her:
“Mother, I have been appointed by my father to the work of protecting the people. My consecration will be tomorrow, as my father commands.
“Sita too must fast with me this night. So the teachers have said, and so my father has told me.
“Whatever auspicious rites are fitting for the consecration tomorrow, have them performed today for me and for Vaidehi.”
Hearing this, which she had long desired, Kausalya, choked with tears of joy, said to Rama:
“Rama, my child, live long; your enemies are slain. Endowed with fortune, gladden my kin and Sumitra’s.
“Surely I gave birth to you under an auspicious star, my son, since by you your father Dasharatha has been won over through your virtues.
“Surely my patience with the lotus-eyed Person (Vishnu) has not been in vain, since this royal fortune of the Ikshvakus will come to rest in you, my son.”
So addressed by his mother, Rama, looking at his brother, who sat bowed with joined palms, said as if smiling:
“Lakshmana, rule this earth with me. You are my second inner self; this fortune has come to you.
“Saumitri, enjoy the pleasures you desire and the fruits of the kingdom. I desire life and kingdom for your sake.”
Having said this to Lakshmana, Rama saluted his two mothers, took leave of Sita, and went to his own dwelling.
