Hanuman Looks at Lanka
Having crossed the unassailable ocean, the mighty one stands at ease on the slope of Trikuta and looks at Lanka. Showered there with flowers dropped by the trees, the valiant monkey looks as if made of flowers. Though he has crossed a hundred yojanas, the glorious monkey of supreme valour does not pant or tire: “I could stride very many hundreds of yojanas; what is the ocean’s breadth, counted at a hundred?” The best of the mighty and of leapers goes swiftly toward Lanka, having crossed the great ocean, passing through blue meadows, fragrant woods full of honey, and mountains covered with trees and lines of flowering forest. Standing on that mountain, the son of the wind sees woods and groves and Lanka standing on the top of the mountain: sarala, karnikara and flowering date trees, priyala, mucalinda, kutaja and ketaka, fragrant priyangu, nipa and saptacchada, asana, kovidara and karavira in flower, trees bound with the weight of flowers and others in bud, full of birds, their tops shaken by the wind; ponds full of swans and ducks, covered with lotuses and water-lilies, many lovely pleasure grounds and pools, beautiful gardens thick with trees that flower and fruit in every season. Reaching Lanka, ruled by Ravana, adorned with moats full of lotuses and water-lilies, closely guarded by Ravana since the abduction of Sita, with rakshasas with fierce bows patrolling all round, the great city surrounded by a golden wall, with houses like mountains and autumn clouds, with white, high streets, crowded with hundreds of watchtowers, adorned with flags and banners and with divine golden gateways bright with rows of creepers, Hanuman sees Lanka as a god might see the city of the gods. He sees it standing on the top of the mountain with its white, lovely houses, like a city flying in the sky, guarded by the king of the rakshasas, built by Vishvakarman, as if floating in the air. Its hips are the ramparts and walls; its garment the wide waters and forests; its hair the hundred-killers and spears; its ear ornaments the watchtowers: Lanka, as if made by the mind, built by Vishvakarman. Reaching the northern gate, the monkey thinks: it is like the dwelling on Kailasa, as if scratching the sky, as if holding up the sky with its lofty mansions, full of terrible rakshasas as Bhogavati is of nagas, inconceivable, well made, clear, once inhabited by Kubera, guarded by terrible, brave rakshasas with many fangs, spears and pikes in their hands, as a cave by venomous snakes. Seeing its great defences, the ocean and his terrible enemy Ravana, the monkey reflects: “Even if the monkeys come here, they will be useless; Lanka cannot be conquered in war even by the gods. Even if he reached this impregnable Lanka, ruled by Ravana, what would mighty-armed Raghava do? There is no opening here for conciliation with the rakshasas, nor for gifts, nor for division, nor is war to be seen. Only four of the swift monkeys could get here: Valin’s son, Nila, I, and the wise king. First let me find out whether Vaidehi is alive or not; I will think about it there, when I have seen Janaka’s daughter.”
Standing on that mountain peak, the elephant among monkeys thinks for a moment about Rama’s success: “In this form I cannot enter the city of the rakshasas, guarded by cruel, mighty rakshasas. All these rakshasas, of great might, valour and strength, must be deceived by me as I search for Janaki. I must enter Lanka by night, in a form barely to be seen, when the time comes, to accomplish my great task.” Seeing that city, unassailable by gods and asuras, Hanuman sighs again and again and thinks: “By what means can I see Maithili, Janaka’s daughter, unseen by wicked Ravana, king of the rakshasas? How can the work of Rama, who knows himself, not be ruined? How can I see Janaka’s daughter alone, in a lonely place? Matters that have come to be are ruined when they meet a bewildered messenger who acts against place and time, as darkness at sunrise. A decision, though made, does not shine when it wavers between purpose and its opposite; messengers who think themselves wise destroy tasks. How can the task not be ruined? How can I not be bewildered? How can my leap across the ocean not be in vain? If I am seen by the rakshasas, this task of Rama, who knows himself, who wishes Ravana’s ruin, will come to nothing. It is not possible to stay anywhere here unknown to the rakshasas, even in a rakshasa’s form, let alone in any other. I think even the wind does not move here unknown; nothing here is unknown to the rakshasas of terrible deeds. If I stay here in my own form, I will be destroyed and my master’s purpose will fail. So, in my own form, made small, I will descend on Lanka by night for the success of Raghava’s purpose. Entering Ravana’s city by night, so hard to approach, I will search every house and see Janaka’s daughter.” Having decided this, the monkey Hanuman, eager to see Vaidehi, waits for the sun to set. When the sun has set, at night, the son of the wind shrinks his body to the size of a cat, wonderful to see. At dusk the mighty Hanuman leaps up quickly and enters the lovely city with its well-divided great roads, spread with rows of palaces, with golden pillars and golden lattices, like a city of the gandharvas. He sees the great city with its seven- and eight-storey buildings, its floors set with crystal, adorned with gold, studded with beryl and gems, adorned with nets of pearls; the rakshasas’ houses shine with them. The rakshasas’ many-coloured golden gateways light up Lanka, adorned all round. Seeing Lanka, inconceivable and wonderful in form, the great monkey is both downcast and delighted, eager to see Vaidehi. He sees the glorious city garlanded with white celestial mansions, with costly golden lattices and gateways, guarded by Ravana’s arms and by night-rangers of terrible strength. And the moon, as if helping him, shining among the stars, spreading the worlds with a canopy of moonlight, rises with many thousands of rays. The foremost monkey hero sees the moon rising, shining, like a conch, the colour of milk and lotus stalks, floating like a swan on a lake.

Then, showered there by a rain of flowers released from the trees, the valiant monkey shone as if made of flowers.
Though he had crossed a hundred yojanas, the glorious monkey of supreme valour, not panting, does not come to weariness there:
“I could stride many hundreds of yojanas; how much more the end of the ocean, counted at a hundred yojanas?”
He, best of the mighty and best of leapers too, swift, went to Lanka, having leapt the great ocean.
Through blue meadows and fragrant woods, rich in honey, he went through the middle, and through those with mountains.
The splendid Hanuman, bull among leapers, passed over mountains covered with trees and lines of flowering forest.
Standing on that mountain, the son of the wind saw woods and groves, and Lanka standing on the top of the mountain.
Saralas and karnikaras, and date palms in full flower, priyalas, mucalindas, kutajas and ketakas too,
priyangus full of fragrance, nipas and saptacchadas, asanas and kovidaras, and karaviras in flower,
and trees bound with the weight of flowers, and likewise those in bud, trees crowded with birds, their tops shaken by the wind,
ponds crowded with swans and ducks, covered with lotuses and water-lilies, pleasure grounds of many kinds, lovely, and many kinds of pools,
crowded with many kinds of trees flowering and fruiting in all seasons, and lovely gardens: the elephant among monkeys saw.
And the glorious one, having reached Lanka ruled by Ravana, adorned with moats with lotuses and with water-lilies,
well guarded by that Ravana since the carrying off of Sita, and by rakshasas with fierce bows moving on every side,
the lovely great city, surrounded by a golden wall, and with houses like mountains, like autumn clouds,
surrounded by white, high streets, crowded with hundreds of watchtowers, beautiful with flags and banners,
with golden, divine gateways, shining with rows of creepers: Hanuman saw Lanka as a god the city of the gods.
Lanka standing on the top of the mountain, with white, lovely mansions, the glorious monkey saw like a city going in the sky.
Ruled by the lord of the rakshasas, built by Vishvakarman, the monkey Hanuman saw it as if floating in the sky.
With rampart and wall for hips, with wide waters and forests for garment, with hundred-killers and spears for hair-ends, with watchtowers for ear ornaments,
Lanka, as if made by the mind, built by Vishvakarman: reaching the northern gate, the monkey reflected,
like the dwelling on Kailasa, as if scratching the sky, as if holding up the sky with lofty, excellent mansions,
full of terrible rakshasas, like Bhogavati with nagas, inconceivable, well made, clear, inhabited long ago by Kubera,
guarded by terrible, heroic rakshasas with many fangs, with spears and pikes in hand, like a cave by venomous snakes.
Seeing its great defence, and the ocean, and Ravana, the terrible enemy, the monkey reflected:
“Even having come here, the monkeys will be purposeless. For Lanka cannot be conquered by war even by the gods.
“And having reached this Lanka, impregnable, a stronghold ruled by Ravana, what will mighty-armed Raghava do?
“No opening for conciliation is found among the rakshasas, nor for gifts, nor for division, nor is war seen.
“There is passage here only for four of the swift monkeys: Valin’s son, Nila, me, and the wise king.
“As long as I find out about Vaidehi, whether she lives or not, there I will think, having seen that daughter of Janaka.”
Then that elephant among monkeys reflected for a moment, standing on that peak of the mountain, on Rama’s success then:
“In this form the city of the rakshasas cannot be entered by me, guarded by cruel rakshasas endowed with strength.
“The rakshasas of great might, great valour and strength are all to be deceived by me as I search for Janaki.
“The city of Lanka is to be entered by me at night, in a form seen and unseen, when the time has come, to accomplish my great task.”
Seeing that city such, unassailable by gods and asuras, Hanuman reflected, sighing again and again:
“By what means may I see Maithili, Janaka’s daughter, unseen by Ravana, the wicked king of the rakshasas?
“How may the task of Rama, who knows himself, not be ruined? How may I alone see Janaka’s daughter alone, in a lonely place?
“Matters that have come into being perish when opposed to place and time, meeting a bewildered messenger, as darkness at sunrise.
“A decision, even made, does not shine between purpose and non-purpose; messengers who think themselves wise destroy tasks here.
“How may the task not be ruined? How may there be no bewilderment? And how may the leap across the ocean not be in vain?
“If I am seen by the rakshasas, this task of Rama, who knows himself, who wishes Ravana’s harm, would be in vain.
“For it is not possible to stay anywhere unknown to the rakshasas, even in a rakshasa’s form; how much less in any other?
“Even the wind would not move here unknown: so is my belief. For nothing here is unknown to the rakshasas of terrible deeds.
“If I stay here, covered by my own form, I will go to destruction, and my master’s purpose will be lost.
“So I, in my own form, gone to smallness at night, will descend on Lanka for the success of Raghava’s purpose.
“Entering Ravana’s very-hard-to-approach city at night, and entering every house, I will see Janaka’s daughter.”
Having decided this, the monkey Hanuman, the hero, eager to see Vaidehi, then waited for the setting of the sun.
And when the sun had set, at night, the son of the wind, contracting his body, then became the size of a cat, wonderful to see.
At dusk mighty Hanuman, flying up quickly, entered the lovely city with its well-divided great roads,
spread with rows of palaces, with golden-coloured pillars, with lattices like gold, like a city of gandharvas.
He saw the great city with seven-storeyed and eight-storeyed buildings, with floors strewn with crystal, adorned with gold,
and wonderful with beryl and gems, adorned with nets of pearls: with these the houses of the rakshasas there shone.
And the golden, many-coloured gateways of the rakshasas lit up Lanka, adorned on every side.
Seeing Lanka, inconceivable, wonderful in form, the great monkey was downcast and delighted, eager to see Vaidehi.
He saw the glorious city, garlanded with white, close-set celestial mansions, with costly golden lattices and gateways, guarded by Ravana’s arms, well guarded by night-rangers of terrible strength.
And the moon too, as if giving him help, shining amid the hosts of stars, spreading the worlds with a canopy of moonlight, rises with many thousands of rays.
The foremost monkey hero saw the moon, with the radiance of a conch, of the colour of milk and lotus stalks, rising, shining, floating like a swan in a lake.
