The Two-Month Ultimatum
Stung by Sita’s words, Ravana answers that the gentler a man is with women, the more they despise him; only desire holds back his anger, as a good charioteer reins in bolting horses. Every harsh word she has spoken deserves death. He gives her two more months of the term he set: after that, if she will not take him as husband, his cooks will cut her to pieces for his breakfast.
The captive daughters of gods and gandharvas in his train are distressed and secretly comfort Sita with their lips, eyes and faces. Heartened, she answers proudly that no one in Lanka seems to care enough for him to stop this disgraceful deed; Rama is an elephant and Ravana a hare. Why do his cruel eyes not fall to the ground, his tongue not wither? Only because Rama has given no command, and to keep her austerity, does she not burn him to ash herself. He stole her by trickery when Rama was away; fate has set this up for his death.
Ravana glares at her, huge as a dark cloud, splendid and terrible as a decorated cremation shrine, and orders the rakshasis to break her by any means, coaxing, gifts, division or force. The rakshasi Dhanyamalini embraces him: why want this pale human woman, when an unwilling woman only torments the one who desires her? Laughing, he returns to his palace with his women.

“The more a man coaxes women, the more he is in their power; the more he speaks kindly, the more he is despised.
“The desire for you that has arisen in me restrains my anger, as a good charioteer, catching the path, restrains horses running wild.
“Desire in men is perverse: toward whoever it fastens on, pity and tenderness arise.
“For this reason I do not have you killed, lovely-faced one, though you deserve death and disgrace, devoted as you are to a false ascetic.
“For every harsh word you speak to me, Maithili, a cruel death would be fitting.”
Having said this to Vaidehi, Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, seized with anger and fury, said this further to Sita:
“Two months must be waited out by me, the limit I have set for you. Then, lovely one, you will mount my bed.
“After those two months, if you do not want me as your husband, my cooks will cut you to pieces for my morning meal.”
Seeing Janaki threatened so by the king of the rakshasas, the daughters of gods and gandharvas were distressed, their eyes troubled.
Some with movements of their lips, others with their eyes and faces, comforted Sita, whom the rakshasa had threatened.
Comforted by them, Sita spoke to Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, words for her own good, proud with the heroism of her conduct:
“Surely there is no one here who stands for your welfare, who would stop you from this disgraceful deed.
“Who but you in the three worlds would ask for me even in thought, the wife of that righteous man, as Shachi is the wife of Shachi’s lord?
“Vilest of rakshasas, the evil you have spoken to the wife of Rama of boundless splendour: where can you go and escape it?
“As a proud elephant and a hare might meet in the forest, so Rama is to be thought of as the elephant and you, low one, as the hare.
“You do not blush to revile the lord of the Ikshvakus here, as long as you do not come within his sight.
“Why have these cruel, ugly, dark-yellow eyes of yours not fallen to the ground, low one, as you look at me?
“I am the wife of that righteous man and the daughter-in-law of Dasharatha: why does your tongue not rot, evil one, as you speak to me?
“Because there is no command from Rama, and to guard my austerity, I do not reduce you to ash, Ten-necked, though you deserve ash, with my own fire.
“I could not have been carried off from wise Rama; without doubt fate has arranged this for your death.
“Brave as you are, Kubera’s brother, rich in armies, why did you lure Rama away by some trick and commit this theft of a wife?”
Hearing Sita’s words, Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, rolled his cruel eyes and glared at Janaki.
Like a dark rain cloud, with huge arms and neck, with a lion’s strength and gait, splendid, with flickering tongue and fierce eyes,
tall with the tips of his crown trembling, with bright garlands and unguents, wearing red garlands and clothes, adorned with armlets of refined gold,
girt with a great dark girdle round his hips, like Mandara bound by the serpent at the churning of the nectar,
with those two full arms the lord of the rakshasas, like a mountain, shone like Mandara with two peaks,
adorned with earrings the colour of the young sun, like a mountain with two ashokas bearing red shoots and flowers;
like a wish-fulfilling tree, like Spring in bodily form, like a shrine on a cremation ground: frightening even though adorned.
Looking at Vaidehi with eyes red with anger, Ravana, hissing like a serpent, said to Sita:
“You who follow a man without policy or wealth, I will destroy you today, as the sun destroys the twilight with its power.”
Having said this to Maithili, King Ravana, who makes his enemies cry out, looked at all the rakshasis, terrible to see:
one-eyed, one-eared, with ears like cloaks, with cows’ ears, elephants’ ears, hanging ears, no ears,
with elephants’ feet, horses’ feet, cows’ feet, tufted feet, one-eyed, one-footed, broad-footed, footless,
with heads and necks beyond measure, breasts and bellies beyond measure, mouths and eyes beyond measure, long tongues and nails,
noseless, lion-faced, cow-faced, sow-faced: “So that Sita, Janaki, comes quickly into my power,
“so do it, all you rakshasis, together, quickly; by harsh means and gentle, by coaxing, gifts and division,
“and by raising the rod of punishment, bring Vaidehi round.” Having ordered them again and again so, the king of the rakshasas,
overcome by desire and anger, roared at Janaki. Then a rakshasi, Dhanyamalini, came quickly up,
embraced Ten-necked and said: “Play with me, great king; what do you want with this Sita,
“a pale, wretched human woman, lord of the rakshasas? Surely, great king, the gods, best of the immortals, have not appointed for her
“the finest pleasures won by the strength of your arms. Whoever desires a woman who does not desire him, his body only burns;
“whoever desires a woman who desires him has a lovely joy.” Spoken to so by the rakshasi and drawn away, the mighty rakshasa, like a cloud, turned back laughing.
Ten-necked set out, as if making the earth shake, and entered his palace, shining like the blazing sun.
Then the daughters of gods, of gandharvas and of nagas, surrounding Ten-necked, entered the finest house with him.
Having threatened Maithili, devoted to dharma, steadfast and trembling, Ravana, deluded by desire, left Sita and entered his own house.
