Hanuman’s Report
Jambavan asks Hanuman to tell everything: how he found the queen, how she is, how Ravana treats her, what she said, and what they must now do and keep secret. Hanuman, his hair bristling with joy, bows his head to Sita in thought and tells the whole story in order.
He tells of the golden mountain Mainaka rising in his path, which he struck before it revealed itself as his father’s friend and offered him rest; of Surasa, mother of serpents, who demanded to eat him, and whose mouth he entered and left in a thumb-sized form; of Simhika, who seized his shadow, and whose heart he tore out. He tells of entering Lanka at nightfall and overpowering its guardian goddess, who foretold the rakshasas’ defeat; of searching all night through Ravana’s inner palace without finding Sita, sinking into despair; and of finding the Ashoka grove and, near the shimshapa tree, a thin, dark-eyed woman in a single soiled garment, ringed by hideous rakshasis like a doe among tigresses.
He describes Ravana’s visit: his threat to drink her blood after two months, Sita’s scornful reply, Ravana raising his fist to kill her, and his chief queen Mandodari holding him back and leading him away. He tells of the rakshasis’ threats, Trijata’s dream and Sita’s promise to protect them; of how he won Sita’s trust by praising the Ikshvaku line, gave her the ring, offered to carry her away, and received the crest-jewel and her message: let Rama come with Lakshmana and Sugriva quickly, or she will not live beyond two months.
Then he recounts his battles: the grove destroyed, the eighty thousand Kimkaras, the temple-palace and its guards, Jambumali, the ministers’ sons, the five generals, Prince Aksha, and Indrajit, who bound him with the Brahma weapon. Brought before Ravana, he delivered Sugriva’s message: return Sita before the monkey heroes destroy your army. Ravana ordered his death; Vibhishana pleaded that a messenger may only be disfigured, not killed; so his tail was set on fire and he was paraded through the streets. Breaking free, he burned Lanka; then feared Sita had burned too, until he heard the charanas say she was unharmed. He saw her once more, leapt back from Mount Arishta, and has come to them. “By Raghava’s grace, by your power, and for Sugriva’s cause, I have done all this. Whatever is left undone, let it be done now.”

When the great-souled monkeys were seated happily, then Jambavan, delighted, asked that great monkey, full of joy,
the son of the Wind, about the course of the task: “How did you see the queen? How is she there?
“And how does the ten-faced one, of cruel deeds, behave toward her? Tell us all this truly, great monkey.
“How was the queen searched out, and what did she say? When we have heard the facts we will think again about deciding what to do.
“And what we must say when we go there, and what must be kept secret there: explain that to us, self-possessed one.”
Charged so by him, his hair bristling with joy, bowing his head in homage to the goddess Sita, he replied:
“In your very sight I leapt into the sky from the top of Mahendra, intent, longing for the southern shore of the ocean.
“As I went, there was something terrible, like an obstacle: I saw a golden, heavenly peak, very lovely,
“standing blocking the way, and I took that mountain for an obstacle. Coming up to that heavenly golden mountain, the best of mountains,
“I made up my mind: ‘I must break this.’ When that great mountain was struck by me with my tail,
“its peak, like the sun, shattered into a thousand pieces. Understanding my resolve, the great mountain said,
“’Son’, in a sweet voice, as if gladdening my heart: ‘Know me as your father’s brother, the friend of the Wind,
“’famed as Mainaka, living in the great ocean. Long ago, son, the best mountains had wings;
“’they roamed the earth at will, harassing it everywhere. Hearing of the mountains’ doings, great Indra, chastiser of Paka,
“’the lord, cut off their wings with his thunderbolt by the thousand. But I was saved from that by your great-souled father,
“’the Wind, then, child, and thrown into Varuna’s home. I must play my part in helping Raghava, tamer of enemies;
“’Rama is the best of upholders of dharma, equal to great Indra in valour.’ Hearing this from that great-souled Mainaka,
“and telling the mountain my task, my mind was lifted. Given leave by great-souled Mainaka,
“that great mountain vanished, in his human body, and as a mountain in the great ocean.
“Taking up the best speed, I set out on the rest of the way. Then for a long time I went on swiftly along the path.
“Then I saw the goddess Surasa, mother of serpents. In the middle of the ocean that goddess said this:
“’You have been appointed my food by the immortals, best of monkeys. So I will eat you, for you have been allotted to me by the gods.’
“Spoken to so by Surasa, I stood bowing with joined palms, and, my face pale, I said this:
“’Rama, son of Dasharatha, the glorious scorcher of foes, entered the Dandaka forest with his brother Lakshmana and with Sita.
“’His wife Sita has been carried off by evil-souled Ravana. I go to her as messenger at Rama’s command.
“’You, a good woman, should help Rama in his realm. Or, when I have seen Maithili and Rama of untiring deeds,
“’I will come to your mouth; I promise you truly.’ Spoken to so by me, Surasa, who takes any form she likes,
“said: ‘No one may pass me; this is my boon.’ Spoken to so by Surasa, being ten leagues long,
“I became half as wide again in a moment; and she opened her mouth wider than my size.
“Seeing that mouth opened, I made myself small again; at that very moment I became the size of a thumb.
“Quickly entering her mouth, I came out of it in an instant. The goddess Surasa, in her own form, said to me again:
“’For the success of your purpose, best of monkeys, go as you please, gentle one, and bring Vaidehi together with great-souled Raghava.
“’Be happy, mighty-armed one; I am pleased with you, monkey.’ Then, praised by all beings with ‘Well done! Well done!’,
“I leapt into the wide sky like Garuda. And my shadow was seized, and I saw nothing.
“My speed checked, looking in the ten directions, I saw nothing there by which my course was stopped.
“Then the thought came to me: ‘What is this obstacle that has arisen in my going? No form is to be seen here.’
“As I grieved, my gaze fell downward then, and there I saw a terrible rakshasi lying in the water.
“Laughing with a great noise, that terrible one spoke these unpleasant words to me as I stood unflustered:
“’Where are you going, huge one? You are the food I want in my hunger. Satisfy my body, long without food.’
“’Very well,’ I said, accepting her words. I filled out my body larger than the measure of her mouth.
“And her great, terrible mouth grew to eat me; but she did not understand me, nor the change I had made.
“Then, shrinking my huge form in the twinkling of an eye, I took her heart and flew up to the sky.
“That terrible one, like a mountain, her heart cut out by me, fell with her arms flung out into the salt water.
“And I heard the kindly voices of great souls moving in the sky: ‘The terrible rakshasi Simhika has quickly been killed by Hanuman.’
“Having killed her, remembering again my urgent task, I travelled a great distance and saw, adorned with mountains,
“the southern shore of the ocean, where the city of Lanka stands. When the sun had set, I entered the city, home of the rakshasas,
“unrecognised by the rakshasas of terrible valour. As I was entering, a woman with the splendour of a storm cloud at the end of an age
“rose up before me, letting out a loud laugh. As she tried to kill me, her hair like blazing fire,
“I overcame that dreadful one with a blow of my left fist, and entered at dusk. Frightened, she said to me:
“’I am the city of Lanka, hero, conquered by your valour. Therefore you will conquer all the rakshasas without remainder.’
“There, roaming all night in Ravana’s inner palace, I did not see Janaka’s slender-waisted daughter.
“Then, not seeing Sita in Ravana’s dwelling, I sank into an ocean of grief and saw no shore to it.
“As I grieved, I saw a fine house-garden enclosed by a high golden wall.
“Leaping over the wall, I saw a place full of trees: in the middle of the Ashoka grove a great shimshapa tree.
“Climbing it, I saw a golden plantain grove; and not far from the shimshapa tree I saw a lovely woman,
“dark, with eyes like lotus petals, her face thin from fasting, wrapped in her one garment, her hair covered with dust,
“her limbs wretched with grief and pain, Sita, intent on her husband’s good, surrounded by misshapen, cruel rakshasis
“who feed on flesh and blood, like a doe among tigresses. I saw her among the rakshasis, being threatened again and again,
“wearing a single braid, wretched, given over to thinking of her husband, sleeping on the ground, pale of limb, like a lotus pool when winter comes,
“turned away from Ravana, resolved to die: somehow I quickly found the fawn-eyed lady.
“Seeing Rama’s glorious wife in such a state, I stayed right there in the shimshapa tree, watching.
“Then I heard a very deep noise of tumult, mixed with girdles and anklets, in Ravana’s dwelling.
“Then, greatly alarmed, I drew in my own form, and stayed in the shimshapa tree like a bird in a thicket.
“Then Ravana’s wives and mighty Ravana came to the place where Sita was.
“Seeing the lord of the rakshasa hosts, lovely Sita drew in her thighs and clasped her full breasts with her arms,
“terrified, greatly alarmed, looking here and there, seeing no protection, trembling, the ascetic lady.
“Ten-necked said to Sita, in the greatest distress, falling at her feet with his head bowed: ‘Think highly of me.
“’But if out of pride you do not welcome me, proud one, after two months, Sita, I will drink your blood.’
“Hearing those words of evil-souled Ravana, Sita, in the height of anger, spoke excellent words:
“’Vilest of rakshasas, to the wife of Rama of boundless splendour, lord of the Ikshvaku line, daughter-in-law of Dasharatha,
“’how has your tongue not fallen out as you speak what should not be spoken? What valour is yours, ignoble one, who carried me off when my husband was not near
“’and came away, sinner, unseen by that great soul? You are not Rama’s equal; you are not fit even to be his slave.
“’Raghava is unconquerable, truthful, heroic, glorying in battle.’ Spoken to so harshly by Janaki, the ten-faced one
“suddenly blazed with anger like a fire on a funeral pyre. Rolling his cruel eyes, raising his right fist,
“he began to strike Maithili; the women cried out in dismay. Springing from among the women, the evil-souled one’s wife,
“the chief queen named Mandodari, held him back. And she said to him, tormented by love, in a sweet voice:
“’What do you want with Sita, you who are like great Indra in valour? Take your pleasure with me today; Janaki is not better than I.
“’Take your pleasure, lord, with the daughters of gods and gandharvas and yakshas; what will you do with Sita?’
“Then the mighty night-wanderer was suddenly raised up by those women together and taken to his own palace.
“When Ten-necked had gone, the rakshasis with hideous faces threatened Sita with cruel, very harsh words.
“Janaki counted their words as straw, and their roaring, reaching Sita, was without effect.
“Their roaring in vain, ineffective, the flesh-eating rakshasis reported Sita’s great resolve to Ravana.
“Then all of them together, their hopes broken, without energy, having tormented her, all fell under the power of sleep.
“And while they slept, Sita, devoted to her husband’s good, lamented piteously, wretched, grieving in great sorrow.
“Rising from among them, Trijata spoke: ‘Eat yourselves quickly, not dark-eyed Sita,
“’the virtuous daughter of Janaka and daughter-in-law of Dasharatha. For today I have seen a terrible dream, hair-raising,
“’for the destruction of the rakshasas and the victory of her husband. She is able to protect us, the band of rakshasis, from Raghava;
“’let us beg Vaidehi’s pardon; that is what I think best. For when such a dream is seen about a woman in sorrow,
“’she is freed from her many sorrows and gains the highest happiness. Pleased by a bow of submission, Maithili, Janaka’s daughter,
“’is able to protect you, rakshasis, from great danger.’ Then the modest young woman, delighted at the thought of her husband’s victory,
“said: ‘If that is true, I will be your refuge.’ And seeing Sita’s terrible state like that,
“I thought, rested as I was, but my mind found no peace. I thought of a way to speak with Janaki:
“I praised the Ikshvaku line, putting it before her. Hearing the words I spoke, adorned with the hosts of royal sages,
“the queen answered me, her eyes covered with tears: ‘Who are you? By whom, and how, have you come here, bull among monkeys?
“’And what is your bond with Rama? Tell me that.’ Hearing her words, I in turn said:
“’Queen, your husband Rama has a helper of terrible valour, a valiant, mighty lord of monkeys named Sugriva.
“’Know me as his servant, Hanuman, come here, sent to you by your husband Rama of untiring deeds.
“’And this ring, glorious lady, the glorious son of Dasharatha, tiger among men, himself gave as a token for you.
“’So I want your command, queen: what shall I do? Shall I take you to Rama and Lakshmana? What is your answer?’
“Hearing and understanding this, Sita, delight of Janaka, said: ‘Let Raghava uproot Ravana and take me.’
“Bowing my head to the noble, blameless queen, I asked for a token to gladden Raghava’s heart.
“Then Sita said to me: ‘Take this fine jewel, for which mighty-armed Rama will honour you greatly.’
“Saying this, the lovely lady, deeply distressed, gave me the finest jewel, and gave me her message in words.
“Then, bowing to the princess, attentive, I walked round her keeping her on my right, my mind set on coming here.
“Then, having decided in her mind, she gave me a further answer: ‘Hanuman, tell Raghava what has happened to me,
“’and act so that, as soon as they hear it, both heroes, Rama and Lakshmana, with Sugriva, may come before long.
“’If it is otherwise, I have two months to live. Kakutstha will not see me; I will die like one without a protector.’
“Hearing those piteous words, anger came over me, and I saw what remained of the task, coming next.
“Then my body grew like a mountain, and, eager for battle, I began to destroy his grove.
“That part of the grove was broken, its beasts and birds frightened and fleeing; waking up, the rakshasis with hideous faces looked about.
“Seeing me in that grove, they gathered from here and there and quickly went and told Ravana:
“’King, your impregnable grove has been broken by an evil monkey, not knowing your valour, mighty one.
“’Such is the folly of this one who has done you harm, king; order his death quickly so that he does not get away.’
“Hearing that, the king of the rakshasas sent out rakshasas very hard to defeat, called Kimkaras, devoted to Ravana’s will.
“Eighty thousand of them, with spears and hammers in their hands, I slaughtered with an iron bar in that part of the grove.
“Those of them left from the killing, quick on their feet, went and told Ravana that the army had been killed by me.
“Then a thought came to me: the fine caitya-palace. Having killed the hundred rakshasas stationed there with a pillar,
“I destroyed in anger that ornament of Lanka. Then he ordered Prahasta’s son Jambumali,
“with many terrible, fearsome rakshasas. That mighty rakshasa, skilled in battle,
“I slaughtered with his followers with a most terrible iron bar. Hearing that, the king of the rakshasas, Ravana, sent the mighty sons of his ministers
“with a strong force of infantry. With the same iron bar I sent them all to Yama’s dwelling.
“Hearing that the ministers’ sons, quick in valour, had been killed in battle, Ravana sent five heroic commanders.
“I slaughtered them all, with their army. Then again Ten-necked sent his mighty son Aksha
“with many rakshasas into battle. That son of Mandodari, the prince skilled in battle,
“as he suddenly rose into the sky, I seized by both feet; whirling him round a hundred times, I crushed him.
“Hearing that Aksha had come and been broken, the ten-faced Ravana then ordered his second son, named Indrajit,
“in great anger, mighty, fierce in battle. That whole army, and that bull among rakshasas,
“I made powerless in battle and felt the greatest joy. The mighty-armed, mighty one had been sent by Ravana with great confidence,
“with heroes mad with pride. Realising that I was unbearable and that his own army was crushed,
“he bound me, very swift as I am, with the Brahma weapon; and then the rakshasas there tied me with ropes too.
“They took me and came into Ravana’s presence. Seeing me, the evil-souled Ravana spoke with me,
“and asked me about my coming to Lanka and the killing of the rakshasas. And I told him all that, said there in the fight, was for Sita’s sake:
“’Wanting to see her, I came to your dwelling, lord. I am the monkey Hanuman, true-born son of the Wind.
“’Know me as Rama’s messenger, the monkey minister of Sugriva. I have come here into your presence on Rama’s errand.
“’Hear the message I bring you. Lord of the rakshasas, the lord of monkeys sends you considered words.
“’Fortunate Sugriva asks after your welfare, and has spoken words with dharma, profit and pleasure in them, beneficial and wholesome:
“’”While I was living on Mount Rishyamuka, with its many trees, Raghava, valiant in battle, became my friend.
“’”He told me: ‘King, my wife has been carried off by a rakshasa. You must make a compact with me to help in that.’
“’”With Sugriva, whose kingdom had been seized by Vali, the lord Raghava with Lakshmana made a friendship witnessed by fire.
“’”Having killed Vali in battle with a single arrow, he made him great king of the monkeys, lord of the leapers.
“’”We must help him here with all our being. Following dharma, he has sent this messenger to you here.
“’”Let Sita be brought quickly and given to Raghava, before the heroic monkeys scatter your army.
“’”Who has not known before the power of the monkeys, who go to the very presence of the gods when invited?”’
“’So the king of the monkeys speaks to you,’ I said. Then he looked at me in anger, as if burning me with his eyes.
“That rakshasa of fierce deeds, evil-souled Ravana, not knowing my power, ordered my death.
“Then his brother, the very wise Vibhishana, pleaded with the king of the rakshasas on my behalf:
“’Not so, tiger among rakshasas; let this resolve be given up. The path you are taking departs from the science of kingship.
“’Killing a messenger is not found in the treatises on kingship, rakshasa. A messenger has to report what he was told to say.
“’Even for a very great offence by a messenger, one of matchless valour, disfigurement is seen, but never death, by the treatises.’
“Spoken to so by Vibhishana, Ravana ordered those rakshasas: ‘Let his tail be burned right now.’
“Then, hearing his words, they wrapped my tail all round with hemp and bark and cotton cloths.
“Then the rakshasas, ready and armed, of fierce valour, set my tail alight, beating me with sticks and fists.
“Bound with many ropes and held fast by the rakshasas, I felt no pain, wanting to see the city by day.
“Then those heroic rakshasas proclaimed me, bound and wrapped in fire, along the royal road, and came to the city gate.
“Then I shrank my huge form again, freed myself from that bond, and stood once more in my natural form.
“Seizing an iron bar, I slaughtered those rakshasas. Then I leapt swiftly onto that city gate.
“And with my blazing tail I burned that city with its towers and gateways, unflustered, like the fire at the end of an age burning creatures.
“’Janaki has clearly perished, for no part of Lanka is seen unburned; the whole city has been turned to ash.
“’In burning Lanka I have burned Sita, no doubt of it; and I have made Rama’s great task fruitless.’
“Overcome with grief, I fell into anxious thought. Then I heard the auspicious words of the charanas,
“speaking the marvellous news, ‘Janaki is not burned.’ Then, hearing that wonderful speech, the thought came to me:
“’Janaki is unburned,’ as was shown by the omens too: while my tail was blazing, the fire did not burn me;
“my heart was glad, and the winds were fragrant. By those omens of evident meaning and by reasons of great weight,
“and by the sages’ words of evident meaning, I became glad at heart. And I saw Vaidehi again, and was dismissed by her once more.
“Then, reaching Mount Arishta there again, I began the leap back, longing to see you.
“Then, travelling the path frequented by the wind, the moon, the sun, siddhas and gandharvas, I have seen you here.
“By Raghava’s grace and by your power, for Sugriva’s cause, I have done all this.
“All this I have carried out there as it should be. Whatever is left there undone, let all that be done now.”
