Hanuman Describes Rama
To test him, Sita asks: where did he meet Rama? How does he know Lakshmana? How did monkeys and men come together? What are Rama’s and Lakshmana’s marks, their build, their thighs and arms? Hanuman is glad she asks, and describes Rama in detail: lotus-eyed, moon-faced, radiant as the sun, patient as the earth, wise as Brihaspati; protector of the world, of the four classes and of dharma; learned in the Vedas and in archery; broad-shouldered, long-armed, with a neck like a conch, dark-complexioned, voice like a drum; and he lists the traditional bodily marks of a great man. Lakshmana, his half-brother, is like him in love, form and virtue, but golden in colour.
He then tells the whole story: how the brothers came to Rishyamuka where Sugriva lived in fear of Vali; how Hanuman carried them on his back to Sugriva; how they made friends; how the monkeys showed Rama the ornaments she had dropped, and Rama wept over them; how he burns with grief like a volcano and finds no pleasure anywhere. He tells of Vali’s death, Sugriva’s search parties, Angada’s party lost in the Vindhya, their fast unto death, Sampati’s news, and his own leap. He is Hanuman, son of the monkey Kesari and of the Wind; his father earned the sages’ blessing by killing the demon Shambasadana at Gokarna.
Convinced at last by these proofs, Sita weeps tears of joy; her face shines like the moon freed from Rahu, and she knows he is truly a monkey and Rama’s messenger. What would she like him to do now, he asks.

“Raghava is shaken by grief at not seeing you, as a great mountain is shaken by a great earthquake.

“Then, coming to Kishkindha with those two heroic princes, the lord of monkeys saw Vali struck down in battle.
“Having swiftly killed Vali in battle, Rama made Sugriva lord of all the hosts of bears and monkeys.
“So, goddess, the union of Rama and Sugriva came about. Know me as Hanuman, come as the messenger of both.

“Having regained his kingdom, Sugriva gathered his great monkeys and sent the mighty ones to the ten directions for your sake.
“Ordered by Sugriva, lord of the monkeys, those of great energy, like the king of mountains, set out over the earth in every direction.
“Then, searching, anxious at Sugriva’s command, they roam the whole earth: we and other monkeys.

“Glorious Angada, Vali’s mighty son, a tiger among monkeys, set out surrounded by a third of the army.

“Then on the top of that mountain we sat in a fast unto death. Seeing all the bulls among monkeys fasting unto death,
“Angada, sunk in an ocean of grief, lamented: your loss, Vaidehi, and the killing of Vali,
“our fast unto death, and the death of Jatayu. While we, at our master’s command, had lost hope and wished to die,

“truly, done by a rakshasa of terrible form on your account. Hearing of Jatayu’s killing, Aruna’s son was grieved,
“and told us, lovely one, that you were living in Ravana’s house. Hearing those words of Sampati, which increased our joy,
“all of us led by Angada were sent off; rising from the Vindhya, we reached the far edge of the ocean.
“Eager to see you, glad and strong, the monkeys led by Angada all came to the shore.
“Longing to see you, they fell again into terrible anxiety. Then I, seeing the ocean, as the monkey army lost heart,
“shook off that sharp fear and leapt a hundred leagues. And I entered Lanka by night, full of rakshasas,
“and I saw Ravana, and you, crushed by grief. I have told you all this as it happened, blameless lady.
“Speak to me, goddess; I am the messenger of Dasharatha’s son. Know me, who have come here for you, as one sent by Rama’s effort,
“Sugriva’s minister, goddess, son of the Wind. Your Kakutstha, best of all who bear weapons, is well;

“and Lakshmana, of auspicious marks, devoted to serving his elder, is intent on the good of your mighty husband, goddess.

“I alone have arrived here at Sugriva’s word. Alone, roaming, taking any form I like,
“I have crossed the southern quarter, wanting to search out your trail. By good fortune I will remove the grief of the monkey armies,
“who mourn your loss, with the news of finding you. By good fortune my leap across the ocean here has not been in vain.
“I will win this glory, goddess, that comes from seeing you. And mighty Raghava will soon come to you,
“having killed Ravana, king of the rakshasas, with his sons and kin. There is a mountain named Malyavan, Vaidehi, best of mountains;

“from there the monkey Kesari went to Mount Gokarna. He, my father, the great monkey, was directed by the divine sages, and at the holy ford of the lord of rivers he slew Shambasadana.
“In that monkey’s field I was born by the Wind, Maithili; I am known in the world as Hanuman by my own deed.
“To win your trust, Vaidehi, I have told you your husband’s virtues. Before long, goddess, Raghava will surely take you from here.”
Convinced so by reasons, Sita, worn by grief, through the fitting tokens recognised him as the messenger.
And Janaki felt unequalled joy; with delight she shed tears of happiness from her eyes with curving lashes.
Her lovely face, with long eyes coppery and white, the face of the large-eyed lady, shone like the king of the stars released by Rahu.
She now thought of Hanuman clearly as a monkey, and not otherwise. Then Hanuman said to her, so lovely to see:
“I have told you all this; take comfort, Maithili. What shall I do? Or how would you like it? I will go back.
“When the asura Shambasadana had been killed in battle by the hero among monkeys at the great sages’ urging, then, Maithili, I was born from the Wind, a monkey equal to him in power.”
