The Death of Tataka
Rama joins his palms and agrees: his father told him in Ayodhya never to disregard Vishvamitra’s word, so he will kill Tataka, for the good of cattle, brahmanas and the land. He twangs his bowstring; the sound terrifies the forest, and Tataka rushes towards it in fury. Seeing her, Rama tells Lakshmana he does not wish to kill her because she is a woman; he will only cut off her ears and nose and break her power and movement.
Tataka attacks with clouds of dust and a rain of stones. Rama cuts off her arms with arrows, and Lakshmana cuts off her ears and nose. She becomes invisible and keeps raining stones. Vishvamitra calls out: “Enough pity, Rama! She is evil and will only grow stronger by magic; kill her before twilight, when rakshasas become invincible.” Rama, aiming by sound alone, hems her in with arrows, and as she charges at him like a thunderbolt he shoots her through the chest. She falls dead.
Indra and the gods praise Rama and tell Vishvamitra to give him the divine weapons, the sons of Krishashva. The sage kisses Rama’s head, and they spend the night in the forest, which, freed of its curse, now shines as lovely as Kubera’s garden.
